El Niño Winter 2026-2027: What a Super El Niño Really Does

A very strong El Niño is now the most likely outcome for winter 2026-2027 — NOAA puts the odds above 90%. So instead of reprinting a probability map, we pulled our NOAA archive and measured what the three strongest El Niño winters on record actually did to 21 US cities. The short version: the North ran warm, the South ran wet, and the snow moved.

Here is the answer most people are searching for. In the three strongest El Niño winters since 1950 — 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2015-16 — the northern United States ran clearly warm: Minneapolis averaged 5.4°F above its 1991-2020 normal, Chicago 4.6°F, and New York City 3.4°F. The southern tier barely moved on temperature but soaked: Miami pulled nearly 2.5 times its normal winter rain and Tampa more than double. Those are not forecasts — they are what our weather archive recorded the last three times the Pacific looked like it does now.

Every outlet will republish NOAA’s official winter map when the Climate Prediction Center releases it in mid-October. What that map can’t tell you is what a strong El Niño winter felt like in your city last time. So we computed it: meteorological-winter (December-February) temperature and precipitation for 21 cities across the three benchmark El Niño winters, each measured against the modern 1991-2020 normal, straight from our 139-million-record NOAA archive. The pattern is remarkably consistent — and it has a couple of twists the generic “milder winter” headline gets wrong.


The 2026-2027 setup: a genuine super El Niño

This is not a marginal event. As of the September 2026 CPC ENSO Diagnostic Discussion, El Niño is present and strengthening, with a greater than 90% chance of reaching “very strong” intensity through the winter. CPC’s forecast puts roughly a 69% chance that the October-December ocean index tops +2.5°C — a threshold not reached since ENSO bookkeeping began in 1950. In plain terms, this winter is forecast to rank with, or ahead of, the three strongest El Niño events we have ever measured.

That is exactly why the three winters in our analysis — 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2015-16 — are the right yardstick. They are the only past events in the same weight class, and they are the analogs professional forecasters lean on too. What a strong El Niño winter did, city by city

Every row is the average of the three strongest El Niño winters, compared to that city’s 1991-2020 normal. Ranked from the biggest warm-up to the biggest cool-down. The temperature story runs north-to-south; the rain story runs the other way.

The warm signal is real — and it’s a northern story

If you live north of roughly the Ohio River, a strong El Niño is your friend if you hate winter. The 9 cities that ran at least a full degree warm are every one of them in the northern half of the country, and the effect gets bigger the farther north you go. Minneapolis is the poster child: a normal Minneapolis winter averages a brutal 19.2°F, but across the three benchmark El Niño winters it averaged 24.6°F. Five and a half degrees does not sound like much until you have shoveled the difference.

The consistency is what makes it forecast-worthy. Minneapolis ran 23.9°F, 25.7°F and 24.3°F in the three winters — every one of them well above normal, not one warm outlier dragging up an average. New York City went 37.9°F, 39.5°F, 41.1°F, warming each time. When the same signal shows up in three independent events, it is a pattern, not luck.

Head to the Sun Belt and the temperature signal fades to nothing. Atlanta, Los Angeles, Tampa, Jacksonville and New Orleans all finished within a few tenths of a degree of a normal winter. Phoenix and Las Vegas actually ran about a degree cooler than normal — the flip side of all those extra clouds and rain. So if a headline tells you “El Niño means a mild winter,” ask “mild where?” It is mild in Minnesota, not in Miami. For the state-by-state breakdown, see how El Niño hits each state.


The rain signal runs the opposite way

Flip the map upside down and you get the precipitation story. The wettest anomalies in the whole dataset are all in the southern tier and along the West Coast, where the El Niño-charged subtropical jet drags storm after storm ashore:

Miami is almost off the chart: nearly two-and-a-half times a normal winter’s rain. Tampa more than doubled, Jacksonville ran 73% above normal, and drought-weary California saw Los Angeles at 157% and San Francisco at 147%. For the Southwest and California, a super El Niño is the closest thing the atmosphere offers to a drought-buster — though, as 2015-16 taught Northern California, the rain does not always fall where the reservoirs need it.

The dry side of the ledger is smaller but real: the interior Southwest desert (Las Vegas came in at 95% of normal) and, in the classic pattern, the Pacific Northwest interior and northern Rockies. Our coastal Northwest stations actually ran wet this time (Portland 148%, Seattle 124%), a reminder that the “dry North” part of the textbook El Niño map is the least reliable piece of it.


The snow twist: El Niño doesn’t cancel winter, it relocates it

This is the finding the “warm winter, less snow” shorthand gets wrong. Yes, the mild northern cities lost snow — but the cities under the southern storm track gained it. In the same three benchmark winters:

Chicago is the clearest loser — it averaged just 13.2 inches across the three El Niño winters against a 29.2-inch normal, a 55% collapse, because it was simply too warm to snow. Boston and New York shed a fifth to a third of their snow for the same reason. But Washington, DC went the other way, averaging 141% of its normal snowfall, and Denver 117%. When the storm track sets up across the southern half of the country, the Mid-Atlantic and the Front Range sit right in the firing line — 2015-16 is the winter that buried Washington under the January 2016 blizzard.

So the honest snow forecast for a super El Niño is not “less snow.” It is less snow up north, more snow from the southern Plains through the Mid-Atlantic, and a real shot at a headline East Coast blizzard. If this winter delivers one, it will join the worst blizzards in US history.


Region-by-region outlook for winter 2026-2027

Upper Midwest & Northern Plains

The biggest warm signal in the country. Expect a milder-than-normal winter and, on the balance of the analogs, below-normal snow — Minneapolis ran 5.4°F warm and lost about 12% of its snow.

Northeast & New England

Milder than normal (NYC +3.4°F, Boston +2.8°F) with somewhat less snow on average — but the coastal storm track keeps the door open for a big nor’easter or two.

Mid-Atlantic

The snow sweet spot. Only modestly warm (DC +2.5°F) but wetter, and historically snowier than normal (DC 141%). This is the region most likely to see a blockbuster storm.

Southeast & Gulf Coast

Near-normal temperatures but markedly wetter and cloudier. Florida is the wettest place on the map — Miami 249%, Tampa 216%, Jacksonville 173% of normal rain.

Southwest & California

A drought-buster signal: LA 157%, San Diego 132% of normal rain, mountain snowpack often well above normal. Desert lows (Phoenix, Vegas) run a touch cooler under the clouds.

Pacific Northwest

The least reliable corner of the El Niño map. The textbook says drier; our coastal stations actually ran wet (Portland 148%, Seattle 124%) and slightly mild in these three winters.

A caveat worth stating: an analog is a guide, not a guarantee. No two El Niño winters are identical, and other players — the polar vortex, the Madden-Julian Oscillation, plain bad luck — can override the ENSO signal for weeks at a time. But three strong events telling the same story is about as much confidence as seasonal forecasting offers. We’ll refresh this page when NOAA’s official CPC winter outlook lands in mid-October.


How we built this

For each city we took a single long-record airport or first-order weather station and pulled every daily observation from our copy of NOAA’s Global Historical Climatology Network-Daily archive. We computed the meteorological-winter (December through February) mean temperature and total precipitation for the three strongest El Niño winters on record — 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2015-16 — and compared each to the same station’s 1991-2020 normal. Quality-flagged observations were excluded. Every number on this page traces to that query, run September 6, 2026; the ENSO strength figures are cited from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, not our database.

Two honest limits. First, a strong El Niño is not the same thing as a super El Niño, and composites smooth over the within-winter swings that people actually remember. Second, our normal period (1991-2020) already includes two of the three analog winters, which slightly shrinks the measured anomalies — the true departure from a mid-century baseline would be a touch larger. We chose the modern normal on purpose, because it is the winter today’s readers actually expect.

Does El Niño mean more or less snow?

It depends where you are — that is the part most forecasts miss. In past strong El Niño winters, snow crashed across the milder northern cities (Chicago fell to 45% of its normal winter snowfall, Boston to 68%) but rose where the southern storm track runs, with Washington, DC hitting 141% of normal and Denver 117%. El Niño does not erase snow so much as move it south and east.

Which regions are wetter in an El Niño winter?

The southern tier and the West Coast. Across the three strongest El Niño winters, Miami recorded nearly 2.5 times its normal winter rainfall, Tampa more than double, and Los Angeles, San Francisco, New Orleans and the Pacific Northwest all ran roughly 45–60% wetter than normal. The dry side is the interior Northwest and northern Rockies.
