About Weather On This Day

Daily weather history and records for 50 major US cities, powered by 55+ years of NOAA data.

Our Mission

Weather On This Day makes historical weather data accessible and interesting. Every day, we publish editorial coverage of weather records, extremes, and notable events across America, turning raw climate data into stories worth reading.

Data Sources

All weather data comes from the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, specifically the Global Historical Climatology Network Daily (GHCND) dataset. This dataset contains over 139 million daily weather observations from weather stations across the United States and worldwide.

  • -Coverage: 1970 to present (55+ years)
  • -Metrics: Daily high/low temperatures, precipitation, and snowfall
  • -Stations: Nearest NOAA weather station to each city, typically within 20-30 miles
  • -Updates: Data refreshed regularly from NOAA Climate Data Online

Editorial Standards

Our daily editorial content is produced by the Weather On This Day editorial team using a combination of NOAA data analysis and historical research. Each day we publish:

  • -A headline story covering a notable weather event from this date in history
  • -Weather summaries for 50 major US cities with temperature records and averages
  • -National temperature rankings and regional roundups

All temperature records and averages are computed directly from NOAA station data. Editorial narratives are fact-checked against historical weather records and news archives.

Coverage

We cover 50 US states, 327 major cities, 63 national parks, and 94 international cities across 56 countries. Daily editorial content is published for the top 50 US cities.
