The Worst Derechos in US History

A derecho can flatten a swath of the country hundreds of miles long in a single afternoon — with hurricane-force winds and almost no warning. Here are the most destructive on record, ranked, and how the August 11, 2026 Midwest derecho compares.

The worst derecho in US history is the August 10, 2020 Iowa derecho — it caused $11.5 billion in damage, making it the costliest thunderstorm event ever recorded in the United States, with winds near 140 mph in Cedar Rapids. The deadliest was the June 29, 2012 mid-Atlantic derecho, which killed 22 people on an 800-mile run from Iowa to Washington, D.C. Both did what only a derecho can: turn a line of ordinary summer thunderstorms into an inland hurricane.

Searches for “derecho” broke out this month for a reason. On August 11, 2026, a fresh derecho carved a 400-mile path from eastern Iowa through the Chicago suburbs and into the Appalachians, killing three and cutting power to more than 700,000. It's the latest entry in a very short, very destructive list.

Derechos are rarer than tornadoes and less famous than hurricanes, so a clean ranking of the worst ones is surprisingly hard to find. We built one — ordered by a mix of death toll, damage, and geographic scale — and pulled NOAA rainfall records for the 2026 event to show a side of it the wind reports missed.


What Counts as a Derecho?

Not every bad windstorm is a derecho. Meteorologists reserve the term for a specific, measurable thing. The word is Spanish for “straight ahead” — the opposite of a tornado, which is Spanish-derived tornar, “to turn.”

The damage engine is the downburst: rain-cooled air plunges out of a thunderstorm, hits the ground, and fans out at highway speed. String enough downbursts together in a fast-moving line — a “bow echo” on radar — and you get a derecho.

The costliest thunderstorm event in modern US history. A single line of storms raced 770 miles across the Corn Belt in about 14 hours, hammering an area larger than 90,000 square miles with hurricane-force winds. Cedar Rapids, Iowa took the worst of it — estimated gusts near 140 mph, comparable to a strong Category 4 hurricane, but sustained for far longer than a tornado. Roughly two-thirds of the city's tree canopy was destroyed in minutes.

The detail that matters: The 2020 derecho flattened an estimated 10 million-plus acres of Iowa corn and soybeans — about a third of the state's crop — and caused $11.5 billion in damage per NOAA, more than most hurricanes that make landfall. It spun up at least 26 tornadoes on top of the straight-line winds. Four people died.

The deadliest derecho of the modern era. Born over Iowa on a record-hot afternoon, it ran 800 miles in about 12 hours, reaching the Washington, D.C. area by nightfall. It killed 22 people — several crushed by falling trees — and knocked out power to more than 4 million customers in the middle of a brutal heat wave, with temperatures over 100°F. Some homes had no power for a week.

The detail that matters: This is the storm that put the word "derecho" into the American vocabulary. The combination of a long-track windstorm and a multi-day 100°F+ heat wave turned the power outages deadly — several of the fatalities came after the storm, from heat exposure in homes without air conditioning.

A derecho tore through the fourth-largest city in the country during the Thursday evening rush. Estimated 100 mph winds blew out windows in downtown Houston skyscrapers, raining glass onto the streets below, and left more than 1 million homes and businesses without power — some for a week, during the first serious heat of the season. Eight people died.

The detail that matters: The Houston derecho is a case study in why cities are uniquely vulnerable. The same winds that flatten a cornfield become deadly in an urban core, where flying glass, cranes, and downed transmission towers multiply the danger. It spawned four tornadoes across Texas and Louisiana on the same evening.

The most recent major derecho — and the reason searches for the word spiked this month. On the afternoon of August 11, 2026, a bow echo swept out of eastern Iowa, blasted the south and southwest Chicago suburbs and northwest Indiana with 70 to 100+ mph winds, then reorganized over the Ohio Valley and pushed into the central Appalachians. A peak gust of 99 mph was clocked at Gary/Chicago International Airport. At least three people died — including one in Portage, Indiana, when a house exploded — and more than 700,000 lost power.

The detail that matters: It was a wind story on the Iowa and Chicago end but a flooding story on the far end. Our NOAA station records show only 0.12–0.80 inches of rain fell across the Quad Cities and Chicago suburbs on August 11, but as the system slowed over the east it dumped 2.16 inches on Columbus, Ohio and 3.27 inches on Charleston, West Virginia (Yeager Airport) the same day. At least six tornadoes were confirmed, including three EF1s in Delaware County, Iowa.

The Boundary Waters–Canadian Derecho (the "BWCA Blowdown")

One of the most extraordinary derechos ever documented — not for the cities it hit, but for the wilderness it leveled. Over the July 4th weekend, the storm flattened an estimated 25 million trees across more than 370,000 acres of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northern Minnesota, a roadless expanse where thousands of campers were scattered across remote lakes with no warning and nowhere to shelter.

The detail that matters: The blowdown injured about 70 people and left 700,000 without power across the US and Canada — yet remarkably, none of the four deaths occurred inside the Boundary Waters itself, despite thousands of campers being there that day. The downed timber reshaped the region's fire ecology for a generation, becoming fuel for major wildfires in the years that followed. It is the textbook example of a "progressive" derecho, active for 22 hours over 1,300 miles.

Meteorologically the strangest event on this list. The May 2009 derecho wrapped up an intense, hurricane-like mesoscale vortex over southern Missouri and Illinois — a rotating core so well-defined that some researchers nicknamed it an "inland hurricane." It produced widespread wind damage independent of the more conventional bow-echo winds ahead of it.

The detail that matters: The embedded vortex is why the 2009 event is studied so heavily: it blurred the line between a derecho, a tornado outbreak, and a tropical system. An unofficial 106 mph gust was clocked at the Carbondale, Illinois airport, where nearly 100 windows were blown out of Southern Illinois University dorms. The storm caused four direct and two indirect deaths.

Why the Same States Keep Getting Hit

Look at the ranking and one thing jumps out: Iowa, Illinois, and Indiana appear over and over. That's not coincidence. The eastern Great Plains through the Ohio Valley is the most derecho-prone region on the planet, and it comes down to a summer pattern forecasters call the “ring of fire.”

When a strong heat dome (the Bermuda High) parks over the southern US, fast upper-level winds ride along its northern rim — right across the Corn Belt. Clusters of storms form on that rim in the late-afternoon heat and get shoved eastward for hundreds of miles without breaking apart. It's the same setup that drives the region's worst heat waves, which is why derechos and dangerous heat so often arrive together — as they did in 2012 and 1980.
