Every EF4 Tornado on Record
The EF4 rating marks tornadoes of "devastating" intensity — one step below the maximum EF5 rating. An EF4 tornado will level most well-built homes, destroy vehicles, and often produce fatalities in its direct path. These tornadoes are rare but, unlike EF5 events, occur regularly in active years: the United States averages approximately 5 to 12 EF4/F4 tornadoes per year.
What EF4 Damage Looks Like
EF4 damage indicators include well-built homes levelled to their foundations (not swept clean, as in EF5), structures with weak foundation anchoring completely destroyed, large sections of school and shopping center walls blown out, vehicles thrown significant distances, and trees debarked on their trunks but retaining some branches. The line between an EF4 and an EF5 often comes down to a single structure: whether the debris from a well-built, well-anchored home is dispersed and the foundation swept clean (EF5) versus whether the foundation retains debris and flooring material (EF4).

As with all EF-scale ratings, the pre-2007 F-scale equivalent is counted with modern EF ratings for statistical purposes. Wind-speed ranges differ: F4 under the original Fujita scale was 207–260 mph, while EF4 is 166–200 mph.
