Hawaii is one of the hardest places in the US for a hurricane to hit head-on: since records began in 1871 only about a dozen tropical cyclones have made a direct landfall, and just one — Hurricane Iniki, a Category 4 that struck Kauai on September 11, 1992 and caused $3.1 billion in damage — arrived as a major hurricane. The islands' biggest tropical danger is often rainfall, not wind: Hurricane Lane dropped 52.02 inches on the Big Island in 2018 without ever making landfall.
